Loyalist College Goes Green for an Entire Week!
The Student Government’s Green Group, organized a very successful Green Week from February 2 to February 6 at Loyalist!
“I hope that Green Week at Loyalist College encouraged everyone to think about how they can be friendly to our environment every day of the year.” – Leah, Human Studies Leader
Environmentally Friendly Bag DistributionThe week began with an environmentally-friendly bag distribution in the Cafeteria, where Residence Leader, Kelly gave away close to 100 bags in less than 15 minutes! Following the bag distribution, a green video was shown on the big screen in the Student Centre to:
- announce the Green Week events
- provide awareness of the impact Canadians have on the environment
- offer tips on how to be green.
Students also had the opportunity to see the popular movie, The Day After Tomorrow, where an abrupt climate change has cataclysmic consequences for the entire planet.
Lug A MugOn Tuesday, students and staff were asked to bring in their coffee or travel mugs for the Lug-A-Mug Day in the Cafeteria. Approximately 100 students and staff were able to purchase coffee, fountain pop or juice for only $1.00, including Biosciences and Business Leader, Erin and her classmates. 207 ballots were cast in the recycling bin contest. Matthew was the very lucky winner of the Green Prize Pack for guessing that there were 55 bottles in the bin. Contents of the prize pack included a:
- February bus pass
- Loyalist water bottle
- Loyalist travel mug
Let's Recycle BooksThe Green Group held a Let’s Recycle Books book drive on Wednesday to raise funds for global literacy programs and to help divert millions of books from landfills. Health Sciences Leader, Tammy and Justice Studies Leader, Justin managed the booth outside the Student Centre and encouraged students and staff to drop off any unwanted books to benefit Books for Africa, an organization which distributes books to children in Africa who are hungry to read, learn and explore the world in ways that only books make possible. Thanks to the support of staff and students, 250 books were collected!
Think Before You InkThursday was the Think Before You Ink campaign in the Student Access Lab. Upon logging onto the computers in the lab, students could view a list of tips on the desktop to minimize the amount they print. Media Studies Leader, Craig and Human Studies Leader, Leah thanked students who left the lab without printing anything or only necessary items for thinking before they inked with environmentally-friendly prizes.
On Friday, the 11th Hour played on the big screen in the Student Centre. The film is produced and narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio and explores how we live, how we impact the earth’s ecosystems, and what we can do to change our course.
Special thanks to Chartwells, Information Technology Services, Student Success Hub, Residence, and Admissions for their support in making the Student Government’s first Green Week successful!
