On Thursday, October 4, 2007, the Loyalist Student Government presented an $800 cheque donation to the Gleaners Tri-County Food Network's Capital Campaign.

Gleaners was operating out of a small location and serving food banks in three counties: Hastings, Prince Edward & Northumberland. Food Banks include Loyalist College, school breakfast and snack programs, soup kitchens and non-profit agencies. In order to continue networking food to the region, Gleaners Tri-County Food Network expanded their regional warehouse by purchasing the building at 25 Wallbridge Crescent on February 28, 2007. Their Capital Campaign goal is to raise $600,000 to help offset the operating expenses for this endeavor.

The Loyalist Student Government appreciates the services Gleaners Tri-County Food Network provides to support the students at Loyalist College which include:

  • initiating Wednesday evening hours at the food bank to enable students to access food after school hours
  • shipping emergency food hampers to the College:
    • from September to April of last year, 70 "5 Day Emergency Food Hampers" were given out through Counseling, Mental Health, Financial Aid & the Student Success Mentors
  • shipping granola bars for a variety of snack sites:
      • estimate that 1 skid of snack items are shipped to the College each month
  • donating other items such as contact lense solutions, extra food items for emergency hampers, baby food and eye care products which are distributed to the Health Centre and Daycare Centre
