Each year, the Loyalist Student Government organizes an amazing lineup of live entertainment, themed nights and special events for you, the student!

Do you have a band or comedian suggestion, a theme night or a semi formal idea? We want to hear from you! Let us know if we’re satisfying your entertainment interests or if you have any questions. Be sure to check out the list of Frequently Asked Questions before making your suggestion or asking a question.

 

I’m in a band. How can we perform at the Shark Tank Pub?

Unfortunately, the Loyalist Student Government only books entertainment, including local and/or indie bands, speakers and comics, through two established entertainment agencies whose roster of artists appeals to the students of Loyalist College. Each year, the students request to see artists who have brand recognition including hit songs that are all over the charts (Nielsen SoundScan, Billboard, iTunes) and are played and requested often on Much Music, CMT Canada, popular radio stations, etc. As a result of this student feedback, the Loyalist Student Government only books bands that are on the charts, i.e. Much Music Countdown, CMT Canada Countdown, Billboard, Neilsen SoundScan, iTunes, etc.  The Loyalist Student Government must ensure that student fees are being spent the way students want. If your band consists of 33% full-time Loyalist students, you can sign up to participate in the annual Open Mic Night. Please check the website frequently for information on how to sign up.

I’m a speaker and/or comedian. How can we perform at the Shark Tank Pub?

Unfortunately, the Loyalist Student Government only books speakers and comedians through two established entertainment agencies whose roster of artists appeals to the students of Loyalist College. Each year, the students request to see speakers and comedians who have brand recognition. As a result of this student feedback, the Loyalist Student Government only books these speakers and comedians with this brand recognition.  The Loyalist Student Government must ensure that student fees are being spent the way students want.

Is it possible to perform at the Shark Tank Pub as an opener for a headliner?

Unfortunately, many of the headliners have smaller bands who tour with them and other headliners have preferences for their openers. As a result, the Loyalist Student Government has little or no input into openers and only books live entertainment (including openers) through established agencies.

Why can’t you book acts like Nickelback, Tragically Hip or Great Big Sea?

There comes a time when certain acts reach a status where they play concert venues instead of clubs or colleges. Bringing in live talent is a very expensive endeavor. In addition to paying for the talent, there’s the rider (food, beverages, etc.), sound and lighting, technicians, advertising, etc. We try to keep student ticket prices as low as possible. Your entertainment suggestions are always welcome!

Why do you only book Canadian bands?
American bands do not normally tour in Canada for reasons such as the following:

  • Logistics
  • Immigration
  • Lack of proper documentation to cross the border (personnel & equipment)
  • Tax issues

When American bands do come to Canada, it is usually for publicity purposes. As a media centre, Toronto is usually their stop so that they can promote their band, new product, etc. Once again, your entertainment suggestions are always welcome!

Where can I purchase tickets for pub nights?
Tickets for all pub nights except for Semi Formals can be purchased at the door. Semi Formal tickets can be purchased in the Bookstore. Please check the website frequently for information on when Semi Formal tickets are on sale.

Can I bring a guest to events?
Yes, for most events full-time Loyalist students are allowed one guest and they must be signed in at the door on the night of the event. The guest must be a minimum of 17 years of age, accompanied by the full-time Loyalist student and signed in the guest book. The student will be held accountable for the actions of their guest. Please check the website's event page before making arrangements to have a guest in case the event is only for full-time Loyalist students.

Can I book the Student Centre for an event?
Unfortunately, the Student Centre/Shark Tank Pub is not available to book for events, activities, etc. throughout the year. The venue is closed from early April until Labour Day weekend.
