Student Government Helps Bring A Smile to the Faces of Children Living with Cancer
The Loyalist Student Government made a $1,000 donation to the Camp Trillium OuR Island’s Capital Campaign on behalf of the students of Loyalist College.
The purpose of the campaign is to ensure that OuR Island (Garratt’s Island) is safe for children living with cancer. Garratt’s Island is located on West Lake near Sandbanks Provincial Park in Picton. This 72 acre facility provides an ideal camping experience in a rustic environment for children living with cancer and their families.
The Student Government’s donation will go towards the necessary upgrade to the facility which includes:
- Re-roofing the cabins
- Replacing flooring
- Building a teen cabin & showers
- Upgrading electrical
- Winterizing
Each year, over 2,000 children living with cancer attend Camp Trillium programs where they can just be children and enjoy the fun of swimming, canoeing, archery, arts and crafts without the worries of the disease they face.
Garrett’s Island is a special place where children living with cancer make memories which last a lifetime through laughter and friendship.With the Student Government’s donation, the Island can continue to reach children with cancer by providing them and their families with fun year-round camps and enriching recreational opportunities.
